Name: Theodore 'Ted' Kord
Group: Justice League
Origin: Chicago, Illinois
First appearance: Captain Atom #83
- Thomas Kord (father)
- Jarvis Kord (uncle, deceased)
An outstanding student and brilliant young scientist, Ted worked with his uncle Jarvis after his father retired and left
him a small research company. Eventually, an explosion destroyed his laboratory. His uncle apparently died and Ted found a
microfilm among his things with the location of the misterious isle Pago. The microfilm also included Jarvis' plans : to create
an army of superbeings to conqueer the world and to hide them in Pago. Ted asked his friend and teacher Daniel Garrett, the
original Blue Beetle, for help and they both travelled to the isle to discover that Jarvis Kord was still alive and working
on his conquest plans. Attacked by the droids, Garrett made him promise that he would keep fighting for justice as Blue Beetle.
Before he had the time to help him, the place crumbled, and both Garret and the mystic jewel which gave him powers were buried.
Nevertheless, Ted had made up his mind to fight crime, so he built a bug-shaped plane and trained. Then, he became the new
Blue Beetle as he had promised.
After some adventures, he retired to work for his company. For a while, Kord Inc. even competed with S.T.A.R. labs. However,
he somehow lost all his money. Thus, he joined the Justice League for a living. He met there Booster Gold, who would be his best friend for years. Both lived carelessly and had as much fun as they could for a long time, often making
fools of themselves and embarrasing the league in their plans to became millionaires.
Unfortunately, the JL had a crisis. Gold, who had always cared for money more than him, left to command the Conglomerate,
a new group created by Claire Lord. He had always had a weight control problem and he soon became fat. Also, Guy Gardner started to tease him more than usual. Kord finally exploded and knocked Guy down. Then, he was fired from the League by Heimlich.
Ted was in and out of the League again, but he finally settled for his own business, this time at a shorter scale.
Recently, Ted got in contact via web with a woman who shared his same interests. They started a friendship and, when things
went on for a while, they fixed a sort of date at a computer symposium. The woman turned out to be Barbara Gordon. Ted soon
identified her as Oracle, but she also recognized him as Blue Beetle. They had been friends ever since. Recently, Ted has been diagnosed a heart disease.
He is not supposed to do any kind of physical exercise.
