Human beings evolved into distinct lines back in the early days of man. The majority of humans became homo sapiens, while
a divergent line became homo magi, imbued with a sensitivity to magic. It was homo magi that built ATLANTIS. they were the
first dominant society in recorded history, tens of thousands of years ago.
After ATLANTIS fell
from power and sank beneath the sea, the remaining homo magi settled into pocket cities including one near Turkey, where they
called themselves the Hidden Ones. Over the centuries, they stayed away from the affairs of homo sapiens and rarely interacted
with them.
This changed when Sindella left the city and met John ZATARA, a magician turned crimefighter.
She aided him, they fell in love, and had a child Zatanna. Sindella faked her death to return to her people, leaving ZATARA
to raise Zatanna by himself. this unfortunately led to a curse placed on the infant by an evil being called Allura. Should
father and daughter see each other, both would die, according to the curse. ZATARA left to search the countless dimensions
for help and Zatanna was raised by others.
When she came of age, Zatanna used her magical powers
to create her stage magician persona and became an international celebrity, This celebrity status allowed her to contact many
super-heroes in her search for her natural father. eventually, the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA helped Zatanna confront Allura
and rescue her father, snapping the curse. |

Later, Zatanna found her mother and learned
of her homo magi/homo sapien heritage-- making her one of a kind in this generation. Happy at last, Zatanna enjoyed her super-
heroic adventuring and ultimately joined the JLA for awhile. Tragedy followed her throughout her life and included the death
of both parents through mystic means. However, each death was a sacrifice to save many, a lesson not lost on Zatanna.
Zatanna wears her traditional tux and fishnet hose costume for stage performances, in honor of her father. When going into
adventures, though, she often has donned a more conventional "heroic" outfit.
Recently Zatanna
has given up adventuring in favor of a quiet life, buying a home in San Francisco and performing when the mood strikes her.
Recently she helped JOHN CONSTANTINE, a mystery man with whom she once shared a relationship, protected TIM HUNTER, a teen
with a difficult choice: accept or reject being Earth's greatest sorcerer. Zatanna showed him Bewitched, a local hangout for
magical beings when not plying their craft, and managed by Tannarak, former foe of the PHANTOM STRANGER. There, Zatanna is
respected by the clientele and is comfortable with other practitioners of magic. |

Zatanna has the ability to manipulate magic in many ways and forms. Her unique genetic structure allows her to use the
magic she was born with as well as learned magic. imitating her father's spellcasting by saying the words of her incantations
backwards, Zatanna must concentrate on her magic to make sure she is using the proper spell.
Her
unique use of magic has left Zatanna vulnerable from time to time, and her powers have waned on occasion. However, each time
she thought she had lost her power, it was regained, internally regenerated. While she is not the mightiest sorcerer on Earth,
Zatanna is a force to be reckoned with and is more than ready to use her magic for the good of humankind.
If there are any limitations on Zatanna's magical abilities, she has yet to discover them. Zatanna's time with the JUSTICE
LEAGUE afforded her limited combat training, but she shuns it in favor of using magic. |
